Chlamydia

Symptoms

In 80% of female patients, there are no symptoms of Chlamydia infection.

In women, the following symptoms are possible

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Bleeding between the periods
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Lower abdominal pain

In men, 50% of patients will have no symptoms. In the remainder, the following symptoms are possible

  • Penile discharge
  • Discomfort when passing urine

Chlamydia infections often show symptoms 14-21 days after exposure but the signs may take a few months to show. In cases where there have been no symptoms, patients may present years later with complications so having regular sexual health checks is very important.

Treatment

Our doctors will prescribe treatment according to the current National Guidelines.

Patients will need to abstain from sex for 7 days or risk re-infecting themselves.

Contacts

Female patients and male patients with no symptoms - all sexual contacts for the preceding 6 months will need to be notified

Male symptomatic patients - all sexual contacts for the preceding 4 weeks will need to be notified

Test of Cure

A test of cure is recommended no earlier than three weeks after completion of treatment.

A test of cure is routinely recommended for:

  • Pregnant women
  • Suspected lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)
  • Suspected poor compliance
  • Persisting symptoms
  • Rectal infection.

If the repeat test is positive at three weeks it needs investigating. It may be due to poor treatment adherence, treatment failure, reinfection, or a false positive result.
